Description
The “Jubilee” Medal of St. Benedict was originally commissioned by the Abbey of Monte Cassino, Italy to mark the 1400th anniversary of the birth of St. Benedict. It was designed by Dom Desiderius Lenz of the Beuron Art School. Today it remains the most common and most loved of all the designs of the Medal of St. Benedict.
The image of St. Benedict holding a cross in one hand and his Rule in the other is in on the face of the medal. On the back of the medal is the cross. These images, like those of all religious articles of devotion, are meant to remind us of St. Benedict and foster our devotion to him as a person whose life and Rule are meant to be a guide for us as we journey through life. The cross reminds us that through his death on the wood of the cross Christ has conquered all sin and evil and the Evil One has no power over us. We are saved by the cross.
