Although Terry wrote 'Catholic Church Music' a century ago, it has some relevance now to the New Translation of the Mass (and a consequent theological emphasis). It was written shortly after the Motu Proprio of Pius X 'Tra le solicitiduni' in which rules for music in the liturgy were re-emphasised. To some extent we need a reassessment of our current hymnody and Terry offers guidelines, some of which will be useful even now. The history of church music, and its difficulties, make interesting reading
The book is well written and readable, with touches of humour. The only quibble is there are no ascriptions of citations and no index.
